Stevie Nicks and Harry Styles perform Fleetwood Mac's 'Landslide' in honor of Christine McVie's birthday

"What I want you to know is that Christine was Harry's girl, she was my girl, she was your girl. She was from here. And she loved all of us."

Stevie Nicks enlisted surprise guest Harry Styles to pay tribute to her late Fleetwood Mac bandmate Christine McVie on what would have been her 81st birthday.

The “Sister of the Moon” singer stunned concertgoers when she welcomed Styles onto the stage during her headlining set at the BST Hyde Park Festival in London on Friday. The pair then performed Fleetwood Mac’s 1975 single “Landslide” as well as Nicks' 1981 duet with the late Tom Petty, “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around.”

“I asked Harry to do this, and it’s always heavy to ask someone to come and sing the song with you when you’re singing about your best friend that died so suddenly and so sadly,” Nicks said in video footage taken at the event posted on social media. “What I want you to know is that Christine was Harry’s girl, she was my girl, she was your girl. She was from here. And she loved all of us. And today was her birthday.”

Nicks admitted, "It's taken me all this time to be able to even try and deal with this situation,” referring to McVie's death at 79 in November 2022.

“One thing that my mom used to say to me when I was little, when I was hurt, she’d go, ‘Stevie, when you’re hurt, you always run to the stage.’ And that’s what I’ve been doing ever since Chris passed away is running to the stage, because the only people that have been able to help me to get over this has been all of you,” she confessed, holding onto Styles’ hand. “And you have done that every night like clockwork. You have made me better, and I want you to know how much I appreciate that. And, so, we go on. Thank you, everybody. Harry, thank you. I thank you. We thank you.”

Images of Nicks and McVie together in their youth were depicted on the large screens behind Nicks and Styles as they performed "Landslide," which Nicks has dedicated to her bandmate since her death. Styles also wore a songbird pin on his lapel, a nod to McVie's song of the same name off Fleetwood Mac's beloved 1977 album, Rumours.

The performance likely came as a shock to Styles' fans, who have not seen him play live since he completed his Love on Tour concert series last year. He also picked up an electric guitar to perform "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" during the show, a tribute to Nicks' close friend Petty, who died in 2018.

Nicks and Styles, who are longtime friends, have a history of performing these tracks together. They previously performed "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" as part of Nicks' induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame back in 2019, with Styles filling in for Petty on guitar.

As for "Landslide," Nicks first performed the song with Styles at his 2017 concert at the Troubadour in Los Angeles shortly after the release of his self-titled debut solo album. The pair reunited two years later to sing the track again at his 2019 One Night Only event at the L.A. Forum following the release of his second record, Fine Line.
