Synth Funk replaces horn instruments used for melodies in traditional funk with synthesizers. Synths also sometimes took the place of other instruments such as keyboards, electric guitars, and bass guitars. Additionally, acoustic drums were often replaced with drum machines.

The genre emerged in the late 1970s as synthesizers became much more widely available, and commercially peaked in the 1980s.
