Wimbledon 2024 LIVE: Tennis scores as Barbora Krejcikova beats Jasmine Paolini in thrilling women’s final

Barbora Krejcikova is the Wimbledon champion after beating Jasmine Paolini in three sets to win her second grand slam title, 6-2 2-6 6-4.

The 28-year-old becomes the second Czech player in as many years to win the Venus Rosewater Dish after Marketa Vondrousova’s victory last year. Krejcikova, the 31st seed, was an unexpected finalist but produced a dominant display in the deciding set to add to her French Open title in 2021. Krejcikova had to save two break points in the final game, before serving out the match with her third Championship point.

“I don’t have the words,” an emotional Krejcikova said on Centre Court. “It’s unbelievable what just happened. It’s the best day of my tennis career and the best day of my life.” Krejcikova made an emotional tribute to her former mentor and 1998 Wimbledon champion Jana Novotna, and broke down in tears at the sight of her name alongside Novotna’s on the board of winners.

Later on, Henry Patten completed a remarkable Wimbledon run by becoming the first British winner of the 2024 Championships with men’s doubles success alongside Finnish partner Harri Heliovaara.

Tomorrow, Novak Djokovic will face Carlos Alcaraz in a sensational rematch of last year’s epic Wimbledon final. Alcaraz, 21, defeated Djokovic, 37, in a five-set thriller to win Wimbedon for the first time and looks the favourite to retain his title. But Djokovic is bidding to make history and win Wimbledon for an eighth time to tie Roger Federer’s men’s record, as well as a 25th grand slam.

Barbora Krejcikova emulates hero Jana Novotna with Wimbledon triumph after three-set thriller

Saturday 13 July 2024 17:16 , Kieran Jackson on Centre Court

For a player so composed, gliding through shots with such picturesque ease and guile, the emotions stayed in tact for Barbora Krejcikova as she claimed her first Wimbledon crown. On court, at least. The smile was difficult to wipe off her face as she received the Venus Rosewater Dish, amid the light of a rare day of south-west London sunshine. It was only when on-court interviewer Annabel Croft mentioned her mentor – the late, great Jana Novotna, champion of 1998 – that the sensations shifted.

The Czechs quite like it here in SW19. Twelve months on from Marketa Vondrousova’s unfancied upset victory against a higher-seeded opponent and a decade since Petra Kvitova’s second Wimbledon title, 31st seed Krejcikova upset the formbook again as she outlasted the spirited performance of Italian Jasmine Paolini in three momentum-shifting sets, 6-2, 2-6. 6-4.

Jasmine Paolini reflects on journey after defeat in Wimbledon final: ‘I’m scared to dream too much’

Saturday 13 July 2024 18:40 , Kieran Jackson

Jasmine Paolini was in a reflective mood after her narrow defeat to Barbora Krejcikova in the Wimbledon final on Saturday.

Paolini was the higher seed – seven to 31 – in the women’s singles final and was chasing a first Grand Slam, five weeks after missing out to Iga Swiatek in the French Open.

The Italian fought back valiantly in the second-set to force a decider but, ultimately, one break of serve in the third set in the Czech’s favour was enough for Krejcikova to claim the title.

“I have to accept today and work hard, but today it’s tough to speak,” she said in her post-match press conference.

Henry Patten secures stunning Wimbledon doubles success with Harri Heliovaara

Saturday 13 July 2024 20:22 , Jamie Braidwood

Henry Patten completed a remarkable Wimbledon run by becoming the first British winner of the 2024 Championships with men’s doubles success alongside Finnish partner Harri Heliovaara.

Patten and Heliovaara had only teamed up in April, but dumped out a succession of seeds on the way to a maiden grand slam final together.

Up against Australian pair Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson, Patten and Heliovaara saved three Championship points in the second set before they sealed a superb 6-7 (7) 7-6 (8) 7-6 (11/9) victory in front of a jubilant Centre Court crowd.

It made Colchester-born Patten only the third British player to win the men’s doubles Wimbledon title in the Open era after Neal Skupski and Jonathan Marray.

Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz and the twist to an epic Wimbledon final rematch

Saturday 13 July 2024 20:00 , Jamie Braidwood

Although it is the rematch he has waited a year for, it was only until a few days ago that Novak Djokovic started to believe he could face Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final. When the 37-year-old underwent surgery on a torn medial meniscus in his right knee on 5 June, it was assumed that the seven-time champion would miss the tournament he places above all others. There were doubts, he admitted, but because it was Wimbledon, Djokovic did everything he could to make the start line. “I was not thinking about, particularly in the first couple of matches, of the eventual title match,” he said. And yet, here we go again.

Alcaraz is the only player to beat Djokovic in his last 51 matches on Centre Court, his epic five-set victory in last year’s final ending a run of four consecutive titles at Wimbledon. The 21-year-old Spaniard will be the favourite when he faces Djokovic in the rematch, in part due to the Serbian’s knee and any lingering questions over his fitness, but also because of how Alcaraz has inherited Djokovic’s powers of inevitability since capturing last year’s title. If you can beat Djokovic on Centre Court once, you can do it again, and Alcaraz is a stronger, more confident player than 12 months ago.

Wimbledon 2024: Barbora Krejcikova on winning the Championships

Saturday 13 July 2024 19:30 , Jamie Braidwood

“Winning here at the Wimbledon is huge for me.

“But I wouldn’t really say it was kind of like my dreams when I was very little. I have like a little notebook that I wrote when I was, like, 12. I don’t know, maybe like three, four months ago I was listing through that notebook.

“I had there that in the future, like back then when I was 12, I wrote that in the future I would like to win the French Open. So it was quite a big dream for me to win the French Open.

“To be honest, maybe things shifted a little bit when I actually met Jana [Novotna] and when she was telling me all the stories about Wimbledon, about the grass, how difficult it was for her to win the title and how emotional she was when she actually made it.

“I think since then I started to see the Wimbledon like the biggest tournament in the world.”

Novak Djokovic: ‘Surreal’ to be in another Wimbledon final so soon after surgery

Saturday 13 July 2024 19:00 , Jamie Braidwood

Novak Djokovic admitted reaching the Wimbledon final felt “surreal” just over five weeks after undergoing knee surgery.

Djokovic set up a blockbuster repeat of last year’s showpiece against Carlos Alcaraz after swatting aside Italian Lorenzo Musetti.

The seven-time champion went under the knife on June 5 after suffering a torn meniscus at the French Open.

And he further dispelled any physical concerns, despite still sporting his grey knee support, with a comprehensive 6-4 7-6 (2) 6-4 semi-final win in two hours and 48 minutes.

Djokovic admitted he was still unsure if he would be able to compete in SW19 just three days before the tournament began.

Jasmine Paolini sets ‘goal’ after second grand slam final defeat

Saturday 13 July 2024 18:20 , Jamie Braidwood

Jasmine Paolini in her press conference after finishing runner-up at Wimbledon and the French Open:

“Today is a little bit tough to speak now. Yeah, it’s been a really good two weeks. I have to accept today and to try to work hard. I’m sure I’m going to do it, but today it’s tough to speak ‘cause I was close but not enough.

“Sometimes I’m a little bit scared to dream too much. I have to say that. I’m going back, trying to practice, to stay in the present, as I said many times. This is the goal for me, my team, to try to keep this level as much as possible.

“If I keep this level, I think I can have the chance to do great things. But if I’m not keeping this level, it’s not coming anything good.

“I don’t know what to dream right now. Today I was dreaming to hold the trophy, but didn’t went well. I’m just enjoying the position where I am right now, 5 in the world.

“It’s unbelievable, honestly. I just did two finals in two Grand Slams. I have to be also happy with the results. Also a little bit disappointed.”

19/21 first serves is a joke! Paolini heads off court - she also lost the first set 6-2 to Donna Vekic in the semi-finals, and is in need of a similar response here.

Wimbledon 2024: Jasmine Paolini 2-5 Barbora Krejcikova*

Saturday 13 July 2024 14:41 , Jamie Braidwood

Krejcikova’s range of shot has been so impressive so far. On 30-30, she earns the right to have a blast at Paolini’s second serve but nets.

A forehand wide seals the game for Paolini but she remains a double-break down. Krejcikova will serve for the set next.

Krejcikova moves a game away from the first set with a dominant display behind serve. She moves in brilliantly and finds the backhand winner up the line.

Krejcikova has made 15 of her 17 first serves so far. This has been some start.

Paolini immediately faces another spot of both on serve as the backhand drifts wide and she faces 0-30. Krejcikova is happy to stay patient on the baseline on 30-30 and Paolini fires long, confirmed by the challenge.

Break point: brilliant depth against from Krejcikova in the rallies, Paolini hangs on but then nets on the backhand up the line!

Wimbledon 2024: *Jasmine Paolini 1-3 Barbora Krejcikova

Saturday 13 July 2024 14:30 , Jamie Braidwood

Krejcikova has started this final wonderfully, though, as a forehand winner onto the line puts the Czech into a strong position to hold.

Paolini fires the return long as Krejcikova takes her time behind the serve. After a series of slices torwards the Paolini backhand, the Italian fires the winner up the line.

Now it’s 40-30, and Paolini withstands Krejcikova from the baseline, this is going to deuce!

WHAT A POINT! Incredible from both players, as Paolini somehow reaches a drop shot from Krejickova, who can scramble back to return the lob. Stunning. And Krejcikova holds on the next serve.

Wimbledon 2024: Jasmine Paolini 1-2 Barbora Krejcikova*

Saturday 13 July 2024 14:23 , Jamie Braidwood

Paolini is forced to face another break point as Krejcikova continued to push deep strikes into the back of the court. But the Italian is scrappy and she wasn’t going to give up on this. What a hold from Paolini as she finds a serve on game point and Krejcikova pushes the return out of play. A big moment in the match already?

Wimbledon 2024: Jasmine Paolini 0-2 Barbora Krejcikova*

Saturday 13 July 2024 14:18 , Jamie Braidwood

Paolini won’t be phased. She’s come back from behind before, as the Centre Court rally behind her.

Oh but that’s a stunning point. Incredible defence from Krejcikova to take control of a rally that had wonderful angles, finished off with the forehand winner. Krejcikova is pushing for the double break as she moves to 0-30.

But Paolini digs in. Forza, she cries, as the backhand winner goes past Krejcikova. 30-30, Paolini with wonderful aggression behind the forehand strike, as Krejcikova can only hang up a defensive lob.

Krejcikova has started on fire from the baseline, though, with that flat backhand crosscourt. She works her way to deuce as Paolini fires long on the backhand.

And now break point, but Paolini saves with a wonderful drop shot. That took guts. What a game this is turning into already.

Two strong first serves from Krejcikova as the Czech looks to consolidate the break - Paolini can’t keep either return in play. Another big serve from Krejcikova, followed by the forehand winner.

A poor return game from Paolini, but a strong start from Krejcikova. She holds to love.

Saturday 13 July 2024 14:12 , Jamie Braidwood

We start with two long baselines rallies, with Paolini and Krejcikova trading backhand errors. It’s Krejcikova who gets a first window of a chance as Paolini’s forehand goes long.

15-30, Krejcikova finds the baseline and Paolini moves in, but her volley drops out! Break point: Krejcikova goes after the second serve, and flashes the first winner of the match with a forehand crosscourt!

Novak Djokovic is Wimbledon’s villain – but boo him at your peril

Saturday 13 July 2024 13:55 , Jack Rathborn

In the aftermath of last year’s Wimbledon final, it was tempting to wonder if Novak Djokovic’s defeat to Carlos Alcaraz signalled the start of a change. Bidding for a fifth Wimbledon title in a row, Djokovic was beaten in an epic five-set battle in his first defeat at the Championships since 2017. As he contemplated the end of his dominance at the All England Club, Djokovic was gracious, his praise of the young Alcaraz glowing and genuine. After so many victories, it was a little startling to see such a fierce competitor embracing the rare taste of defeat like an old friend, reflecting an attitude of “win some, lose some” in front of the Centre Court crowd.

But rather than marking the shift towards a more mutually appreciative relationship, the opposite has occurred. On Monday night, as Djokovic sealed victory over Holger Rune in the fourth round, the seven-time champion turned on sections of the Wimbledon crowd for “showing disrespect” - Rune was showered with cries of “Ruuuuuuune!”, which sounded a lot like “Boooooooo!”.

Having played Rune several times previously, Djokovic would have been aware that such a reaction from the crowd towards the Dane was nothing new. Djokovic, though, chose to hear boos. They acted as fuel to increase his level and take a step closer to an eighth title.

Princess of Wales to attend Wimbledon men’s final and present trophy to winner

Saturday 13 July 2024 13:30 , Jamie Braidwood

The Princess of Wales will attend the Wimbledon men’s final on Sunday and present the trophy, Kensington Palace has confirmed.

Kate, patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, will not attend Saturday’s women’s final and Wimbledon chairwoman, Debbie Jevans, will present the trophy on her behalf to either Jasmine Paolini or Barbora Krejcikova.

Kensington Palace confirmed on Saturday morning that Kate would attend the finale of the Championships on Sunday to present the men’s trophy to either Novak Djokovic or Carlos Alcaraz.

Kate is undergoing chemotherapy for cancer and made a brief return to the public spotlight last month at Trooping the Colour.

Jasmine Paolini wins record-breaking Wimbledon semi-final

Saturday 13 July 2024 12:40 , Jamie Braidwood

As a 57th and final unforced error sprung off Donna Vekic’s forehand and into the tramline, Jasmine Paolini ran towards her player box in complete and utter euphoria. This year’s breakthrough star on the tennis tour – that goes for men and women – has reached a second Grand Slam final in a matter of weeks. At the end of this titanic battle, she blew a kiss to her corner and then consoled her heartbroken opponent.

As the old adage goes, it felt cruel that somebody had to lose. Both Vekic and Paolini were contesting their first semi-final at Wimbledon and their desperation to reach Saturday’s showpiece was writ large throughout this absorbing battle of wills. In the end, only a first-to-10 final-set tie-break could separate them – and even then, there was barely a flip of a coin between them. Match of the tournament? Possibly so.

Jasmine Paolini matches Serena Williams feat by reaching Wimbledon final

Saturday 13 July 2024 12:20 , Jamie Braidwood

Jasmine Paolini is the first woman to reach back-to-back Roland Garros and Wimbledon finals since Serena Williams in 2016.

But this is a woman who, until this year, had never gone beyond the second round of a grand slam and yet, five weeks ago, was in the final of the French Open.

“You are crazy, I would say, yes,” she said. “Yeah, I don’t have words. Just, yeah, you are crazy.

“Two grand slam finals in a row was crazy to believe, I think, no? I’m also surprising how at the moment, until now in this moment, I’m living this.

“I feel maybe Saturday I will be so nervous, I don’t know. But I feel also relaxed. I’m the same person. I’m doing the same things. Yeah, I don’t know. I’m surprised a little bit how I’m managing this.

“I don’t want to say more because maybe Saturday I’m going to be shaking. Yeah, I’m surprising myself to live this with really relaxing mood, you know?”

Jasmine Paolini has surprised herself by reaching back-to-back grand slam finals

Saturday 13 July 2024 12:00 , Jamie Braidwood

Jasmine Paolini admitted that if anyone had told her two months ago she would be in the Wimbledon final, she would think they were “crazy”.

Paolini, the 28-year-old seventh seed, won a Centre Court classic of a semi-final against Donna Vekic 2-6 6-4 7-6 (10/8) after a nerve-shredding match tie-break.

At two hours and 51 minutes it was the longest women’s semi-final in Wimbledon history, and at the end of it Paolini became the first Italian woman to reach the final, where she will face Barbora Krejcikova.

It is a remarkable run from a player who had not won a Tour-level match on grass until 15 days ago, in Eastbourne, and had lost in the first round in her only previous three visits to SW19.

Emotional Barbora Krejcikova makes Jana Novotna tribute after reaching final

Saturday 13 July 2024 11:40 , Jamie Braidwood

Barbora Krejcikova was inspired by the memory of her mentor Jana Novotna as she battled back to beat former champion Elena Rybakina and reach her first Wimbledon singles final.

Novotna famously cried on the shoulder of the Duchess of Kent after losing the 1993 final against Steffi Graf from a winning position before finally lifting the trophy five years later.

She took a teenage Krejcikova under her wing but died of cancer in 2017 aged only 49.

Krejcikova became emotional when taking about Novotna in her post-match interview, saying: “I’m thinking about Jana a lot. I have so many beautiful memories and, when I step on the court here, I’m just fighting for every single ball because that’s what I think she would want me to do.

“We talked about her matches here. It’s been some while so I can’t really tell you what it was about. But we definitely did. I hope she would be proud.”

Barbora Krejcikova finally living up to her own billing after difficult year

Saturday 13 July 2024 11:20 , Jamie Braidwood

Barbora Krejcikova complained last year that she was never in the conversation surrounding the top of women’s tennis.

Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina were the reigning grand slam champions, yet Krejcikova had recent wins over all three.

“It’s about Iga, Aryna, and Elena, and I’m not really there,” the 2021 French Open winner moaned in Miami in March 2023.

Unfortunately, in the intervening 16 months that gripe has looked more and more risible.

Injury and illness have taken their toll as Krejcikova tumbled down the rankings and after a two-month lay-off earlier this year she lost all four of her matches, including a first-round exit at Roland Garros, before arriving on the grass.

But now, as world number 32, Krejcikova beat Rybakina in three tense sets to reach a first Wimbledon final, writes Andy Sims.

Alfie Hewett on course for Wimbledon double and receives boost as rival knocked out

Saturday 13 July 2024 11:00 , Jamie Braidwood

Alfie Hewett could toast double Wimbledon success this weekend after he followed up his thrilling wheelchair singles semi-final win with victory alongside Gordon Reid in the last four of the men’s doubles.

Hewett claimed revenge over Gustavo Fernandez at the start of day 12 of the Championships, winning 4-6 6-4 7-5 against the third seed, who had knocked him out of the French Open last month.

Victory after two hour and 41 minutes on Court Three has kept Hewett on track to claim a first singles triumph at the All England Club after runner-up finishes in each of the last two years.

Second seed Hewett lost to Tokito Oda in the final 12 months ago, but will not take on the Japanese teenager after he was edged out by Spaniard Martin De La Puente in three sets.

It sent De La Puente through to a first grand slam final and means a first-time Wimbledon winner will be crowned on Sunday.

The Carlos Alcaraz experience – and why it is so effective as Spaniard reaches second Wimbledon final

Saturday 13 July 2024 10:40 , Jamie Braidwood

The common courtesy of an apology to the opponent in a moment of fortune is fairly unique to tennis. You rarely see a hand up in one’s regrets for a fortuitously shinned shot into the goal; nor for a shanked golf drive rebounding off the trees and onto the fairway. Perhaps it’s the sport’s genuine adversarial nature which affords this refreshing sign of affability in the heat of battle. Do they mean it? Who knows – but the simple hand signal is enough.

Intriguingly, it is also an unorthodox indicator of what it means to watch, and face, Carlos Alcaraz. A player so unpredictable in his shot selection and rhythm that, in the 57-minute first set of his Wimbledon semi-final against Daniil Medvedev, he raised his hand in apology five times. A few net cords here, a few framed groundstrokes there, in a set he eventually lost. Yet the intoxicating Spaniard’s greatest weakness is also his greatest strength.

Spellbinding lunacy: welcome to another episode of the Carlos Alcaraz experience

Carlos Alcaraz hoping to play part in Spain’s Wimbledon-Euro 2024 double

Saturday 13 July 2024 10:20 , Jamie Braidwood

Carlos Alcaraz is eyeing up double Spanish success on a “perfect Sunday”.

The 21-year-old is one win away from a second successive Wimbledon title after fighting from a set down to defeat Daniil Medvedev.

It was a repeat of last year’s semi-final, which the Spaniard had won easily, but this time he was made to work harder for his 6-7 (1) 6-3 6-4 6-4 victory.

Now he must try to stage another repeat in the final, with seven-time champion Novak Djokovic again the man across the other side of the net.

Alcaraz has become a firm favourite at Wimbledon but he experienced booing on Centre Court after his match when he suggested it was going to be a good day for Spanish people on Sunday.

When is Carlos Alcaraz vs Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final?

Saturday 13 July 2024 10:00 , Jamie Braidwood

Carlos Alcaraz faces Novak Djokovic in a sensational rematch of their epic Wimbledon final.

Alcaraz defeated Djokovic in five thrilling sets last year to win the Championships for the first time in one of the greatest finals of the modern era. The Spaniard is the only player to beat Djokovic in the last 11 years on Centre Court and has since gone on to win the French Open for his third grand slam title at the age of 21.

Djokovic, at 37, is bidding to become the oldest Wimbledon champion in the Open era and equal Roger Federer’s men’s record of eighth titles at the All England Club. The 24-time grand slam champion has made a stunning recovery from undergoing knee surgery just four weeks ago but has not won a title this season.

“He already beat me here in a Wimbledon final in a five-set thriller so I don’t expect anything less than a huge battle,” Djokovic said after beating Lorenzo Musetti in the semi-finals. “He is as complete a player as they come, so it’s going to take the best of my ability to beat him.”

Novak Djokovic: ‘Surreal’ to be in another Wimbledon final so soon after surgery

Saturday 13 July 2024 09:40 , Jamie Braidwood

Why is Novak Djokovic celebrating by playing the violin at Wimbledon?

Saturday 13 July 2024 09:20 , Jamie Braidwood

Novak Djokovic was booed on Centre Court as he pretended to play the violin on his racket after booking his place in a 10th Wimbledon final

The 37-year-old was making his first appearance since turning on sections of the crowd and accusing them of “showing disrespect” following his win over Holger Rune.

But Djokovic was in impressive form as he defeated Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets to set up a rematch of last year’s Wimbledon final against Carlos Alcaraz.

“During the match it’s business time, trying to outplay your opponent,” he said. “I’m very happy to be in another final but I don’t want to stop here. Hopefully I’ll get my hands on that trophy.”

Novak Djokovic soaks in the boos to set up thrilling Wimbledon rematch with Carlos Alcaraz

Saturday 13 July 2024 09:00 , Jamie Braidwood

So the all-time classic will have an instant rematch. Novak Djokovic will face Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final on Sunday in a repeat of last year’s epic five-setter, as the 37-year-old bids to become the oldest champion in the Open era at the All England Club.

It’s the final everyone wanted to see and yet, after beating the inspired Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets, the boos that rained down from the Centre Court crowd were rather illustrative of how difficult a journey this has been for the seven-time champion. Djokovic celebrated by pretending to play the violin on his racket, in a tribute to his six-year-old daughter. But clearly, a few days after accusing some Wimbledon fans of “showing disrespect”, some in the crowd thought the gesture was directed at them.

Jasmine Paolini faces Barbora Krejcikova in the Wimbledon final as a new champion will be crowned at the All England Club.

Both players are through to the Wimbledon singles final for the first time in what has been another unpredictable tournament on the women’s side - one that will produce an eighth different winner in the last eight years.

Paolini, 28, had only ever reached the first round of Wimbledon before this year but has enjoyed a breakthrough season, reaching the French Open final last month where the Italian lost to Iga Swiatek.

Krejcikova, also 28, a is a former French Open winner in 2021 and two-time Wimbledon doubles champion, so carries greater experience, but the Czech had not been past the fourth round of the singles in SW19 before this month.

Both Paolini and Krejcikova come through epic semi-final matches on Thursday, with the seventh seed Paolini defeating Donna Vekic in the longest Wimbledon women’s semi-final in history, while Krejcikova came from a set down to defeat former champion Elena Rybakina.

A new Wimbledon champion will be crowned as Jasmine Paolini faces Barbora Krejcikova in the women’s final for the Venus Rosewater Dish. Another unpredictable women’s tournament has produced an unexpected final as first-time Wimbledon singles finalists Paolini and Krejcikova meet on Centre Court.

The 28-year-old reached the French Open final last month and is the first Italian woman to contest the Wimbledon final, having only previously reached the first round before this year. Krejcikova will come into the final as the narrow favourite as a former French Open winner in 2021. The Czech is also a two-time Wimbledon champion in the doubles.

Both players battled to reach the final, with Paolini beating Donna Vekic in the longest womens’ semi-final in history and Krejcikova knocking out former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina.
