Further testing revealed Paxton's right calf is partially torn, and it's unclear whether or not he'll be able to return in 2024, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. Paxton was initially diagnosed with a calf strain but the injury is more severe than anticipated. A timeline isn't available for Paxton's return and with roughly six weeks left in the regular season, so it's not a guarantee he'll be back prior to the playoffs or be available for any potential postseason starts. Per Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald the Red Sox plan on inserting Cooper Criswell (COVID-19 injured list) into the rotation in Paxton's place.
Winckowski (3-1) gave up an unearned run and retired all three batters he faced en route to picking up a win Monday in the Red Sox's 5-4 extra-inning victory over the Rangers. Winckowski was back in the bullpen two days after he was called upon to make a spot start in Saturday's 5-4 loss to the Astros. He ended up serving as more of an opener for that contest, tossing 38 pitches over three innings of one-run ball before giving way to Brad Keller, who piggybacked him for four innings. Winckowski made quick work of the Rangers in his return to a relief role, inducing three groundouts to retire the side in the top of the 10th inning before the Red Sox broke through with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Given the light workload Monday, Winckowski could be a candidate to return to a starting role on three days' rest in Baltimore on Friday, when the Red Sox will require a replacement in the rotation for the injured James Paxton (calf). Cooper Criswell could end up serving as the longer-term replacement for Paxton, but he's currently on the COVID-19 injured list and may not be fully recovered from his illness to take the hill Friday.
Bello did not factor into the decision in Monday's 5-4 win over Texas, allowing one run on four hits and three walks over six innings. He struck out five. The 25-year-old notched his eighth quality start of the season -- and third since the All-Star break -- with this 95-pitch appearance. Bello held the Rangers to no extra-base hits, as the only run he yielded came on a Marcus Semien knock in the fifth inning. Post-break, the Boston right-hander has pitched to a 3.86 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 29:11 K:BB over 29 innings across five starts. He lines up to face the first-place Orioles in Baltimore for his next outing this weekend.
Criswell (illness) might not be ready for activation Friday, when he's first eligible to return from his seven-day stay on the COVID-19 injured list, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports. Criswell has dealt with some significant symptoms while on the COVID-19 IL, and while the Red Sox are hopeful that he can start Friday in Baltimore in place of James Paxton (calf), he sounds like he might need a bit more time to recover. Josh Winckowski would be a candidate to take the ball for Boston on Friday if Criswell isn't ready.
The Red Sox recalled Horn from Triple-A Worcester on Monday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. Horn holds a 6.39 ERA over nine relief appearances during his time with Boston this season. He'll give manager Alex Cora a fresh bullpen arm.
The Red Sox activated Bello (personal) from the paternity list Monday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. Bello was away from the club over the weekend while welcoming a new child to the family, but he is back with the Red Sox to start Monday's game against the Rangers. The right-hander sports a nifty 45:12 K:BB over 40.1 innings since the start of July, although he's submitted a 4.46 ERA during that stretch.
The Red Sox placed Paxton on the 15-day injured list Monday with a right calf strain, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. Paxton suffered the injury during Sunday's 10-2 loss to the Astros and required assistance off the field. The southpaw was scheduled to undergo an MRI on Monday, but the severity of the calf strain has not yet been revealed. The Red Sox are likely to turn to either Josh Winckowski or Cooper Criswell (COVID-19 injured list) to serve as their new fifth starter in place of Paxton, who is first eligible to return from the IL on Aug. 27.
