Blackburn has thrown his cutter and changeup more, at the expense of his four-seam fastball and curveball, since joining the Mets, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports. While the Mets' coaching staff didn't explicitly tell the right-hander to drop the curve and four-seamer from his arsenal, they did encourage Blackburn to lean more on the pitches that graded out the best. "I know my cutter is one of my better, if not my best pitch, analytically," Blackburn said. "I'm just kind of taking that and running with it. Really just using my best pitch as much as possible... There were times earlier this year where I did get beat on some fastballs, and after the fact, it's like 'What am I doing? Throwing my fourth- or fifth-best pitch?' " Blackburn has been a strong addition to the Mets' rotation since being acquired at the trade deadline, delivering back-to-back quality starts -- including one at Coors Field -- with a 12:4 K:BB in 12 innings.
The Mets could activate Marte (knee) from the 10-day injured list as soon as this weekend, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. Marte began a rehab assignment last Wednesday and has appeared in three games in the minors, going 2-for-7 with a solo home run, a walk and a stolen base. The first two of those games came at Single-A St. Lucie before he shifted his assignment to Double-A Binghamton on Sunday. Though Marte hasn't experienced any setbacks with the bone bruise in his right knee while on assignment, the Mets want him to get in some more action in the upper levels of the minors before reinstating him. More specifically, manager Carlos Mendoza said that Marte needs to play seven innings in right field on back-to-back days before the Mets would feel comfortable bringing back. Marte had been the Mets' everyday right fielder before he landed on the shelf June 25, but he may have to settle for a timeshare or even the short side of a platoon at the position after New York added the lefty-hitting Jesse Winker to its outfield ranks ahead of the trade deadline.
McNeil went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Sunday's loss to the Mariners. McNeil gave the Mets their only run in Sunday's blowout loss with a sixth inning homer off Luis Castillo. It's his second home run this month and his seventh since the beginning of July after he hit just one home run in June. McNeil has been hitting the ball much better lately compared to the season as a whole. Since July 19, he's slashing .324/.358/.662 with six homers, 14 RBI and 16 runs. He's up to 11 home runs on the year, which is the most he's had in a season since putting up 23 in 2019. For the year, the 32-year-old is slashing .238/.293/.384 with 38 RBI, 51 runs, five steals and a 25:52 BB:K in 404 plate appearances.
Severino (7-6) took the loss Sunday against the Mariners, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks while striking out eight over five innings. Severino had allowed just one run through four innings, which came on a solo home run by Jorge Polanco. He was one out away from getting through the fifth unscathed, but Randy Arozarena extended the inning with an RBI infield single before Cal Raleigh opened things up with a two-run homer. On a positive note, Severino racked up eight strikeouts, his most since he had 10 back on June 23 but he's now given up five homers and 14 runs over his last three starts (15 innings). The 30-year-old now owns a 4.17 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 109:46 K:BB in 133.2 innings. He'll look for some better results when he takes the mound in a weekend series against the Marlins his next time out.

Manaea (8-5) took the loss against the Mariners on Saturday, allowing three runs on four hits and five walks over three innings while striking out three. All three runs charged to Manaea came across in the opening frame when the right-hander surrendered hits to four of the first six batters he faced, including three doubles, while also allowing a runner to advance on a wild pitch. He would manage to get through the next two innings unscathed, but was relieved by Huascar Brazoban to open the fourth after throwing 85 pitches through three innings. It marked the shortest outing of the season for Manaea after hurling 14 scoreless frames over his previous two starts, while the five walks on the night matched his season high.
