Wesneski (forearm) threw a 25-pitch bullpen Tuesday, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Wesneski has been rehabbing in Arizona from his strained right forearm and Tuesday's session marked his first mound work since being placed on the IL on July 20. The 26-year-old appears to be multiple weeks out from being reinstated from the injured list.
Imanaga did not factor into the decision Monday, allowing seven runs (three earned) on seven hits and one walk over five innings against the Guardians. He struck out three. Imanaga allowed two homers, the fifth time in 22 starts he's given up multiple long balls this season. However, the three-run blast off the bat of Jhonkensy Noel did not impact Imanaga's earned run line as it came following an error that had extended the fourth inning. Imanaga followed up by allowing three runs in the fifth, this time all earned, and a night that began with a promising three-run lead ended with him leaving with a four-run deficit. The five innings represented the Japanese rookie's shortest outing since allowing 10 runs over three innings on June 21 and extended a streak that has seen him allow three or fewer earned runs in seven of his last eight outings. He'll carry a 3.16 ERA and 1.08 WHIP into his next start, tentatively slated to take place in the friendly confines against the Blue Jays.
Merryweather (1-1) allowed one run on three hits and a walk over an inning of relief to take the loss Monday against the Guardians. He struck out one. Merryweather worked a quick seventh inning but he couldn't keep things going in the eighth, when he allowed three straight hits to start the frame, with the final one bringing in the go-ahead run before he got the hook. The righty missed most of this season with a rib stress fracture, as this was just his 10th appearance of the year. Merryweather was much more heavily used in 2023, when he posted a 3.38 ERA and 98 strikeouts across 72 innings out of the bullpen. If the 32-year-old is healthy heading into next season, he should be able to secure a middle-relief role again for the Cubs or another team based on his ability to miss bats.
Crow-Armstrong went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in Monday's 9-8 loss to the Guardians Crow-Armstrong went deep in the fourth inning for his fourth home run of the season and first since July 14, when he left the yard twice. The 22-year-old is known more for his speed, as he has 23 stolen bases this year, though he did launch 20 homers combined between Double-A and Triple-A in 2023. If Crow-Armstrong can develop his power at the MLB level, he'd take a big step forward as a fantasy asset.
Happ went 1-for-2 with three walks, a two-run home run and two additional runs scored in Monday's 9-8 loss to the Guardians. Happ celebrated his 30th birthday in style as he reached the 20-homer plateau for the second straight season and third time in the last four years. The outfielder also demonstrated his good eye at the plate as he drew three walks in a game for the first time this season. Happ is now riding a four-game hitting streak as well, and he's gone deep three times during the hot streak.
Manager Craig Counsell said Monday that Brown (neck) has been shut down from throwing "for the time being," Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Brown continues to experience lingering discomfort in his neck that has kept him on the injured list since June 11. Counsell did note that the situation is not season-ending, and he expressed confidence that rest will be enough for Brown to recover, per Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune.
Amaya went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI in Saturday's 3-1 win over the White Sox. Amaya is now riding a modest two-game hitting streak, but it's been a struggle overall for the catcher. He has just a .588 OPS through 83 games, which is a 100-point drop from his figure last season as a rookie. The 25-year-old was a fairly well-regarded prospect on his way up to the majors, but that has yet to translate to significant offensive success. Amaya should continue to see regular playing time, however, as journeyman Christian Bethancourt is the only other catching depth currently on the MLB roster.
