McCarthy (knee) has a tear in his meniscus in his right knee and the severity of the injury will be determined once he undergoes surgery, Andrew Krammer of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. McCarthy is set to miss extended time, but an exact timetable "will be something determined during the procedure," according to head coach Kevin O'Connell. If the quarterback is dealing with a small tear, he may be able to address it with a cleanup surgery, but a full repair would mean a longer recovery, Ben Goessling of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. O'Connell also added that the team will ultimately do "what's best for the long-term health of J.J."

J.J. McCarthy : Severity of knee injury TBD
Sam Darnold : Locked in as Week 1 starter
Darnold is in line to open the regular season as Minnesota's starting quarterback with J.J. McCarthy (knee) set to undergo surgery to address a meniscus tear, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Darnold has been handling the majority of first-team reps throughout training camp, and he played just one series on offense in Saturday's preseason win over the Raiders, but the plan had reportedly been for McCarthy's involvement to grow leading up to Week 1. Now, with McCarthy slated to miss anywhere between 4-to-6 weeks or multiple months, depending on whether he requires a meniscus trim or repair, Darnold has a clear path to the starting gig to open the regular season, and potentially the foreseeable future. In his lone preseason series thus far, Darnold completed four of eight pass attempts for 59 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. Given the quality of Darnold's pass-catching corps, headlined by wideouts Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, plus Aaron Jones out of the backfield, the veteran journeyman could be in the mix as an under-the-radar fantasy option in deeper leagues when Minnesota faces the Giants on the road Week 1.
J.J. McCarthy : Expected to undergo knee surgery
McCarthy (knee) is expected to undergo knee surgery to address a meniscus issue after having an MRI on Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. McCarthy reported knee soreness over the weekend, and the MRI he underwent Monday revealed an issue serious enough to require surgery. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that McCarthy will require either a meniscus trim, which would require a 4-to-6 week recovery, per Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, or a repair which could sideline the rookie quarterback multiple months. Even if McCarthy is able to receive the quicker recovery timeline, Sam Darnold now faces a clear path to the Week 1 starting gig for Minnesota.
Lewis Cine : Records two tackles vs. Raiders
Cine (leg) registered two tackles (one solo) in Saturday's 24-23 preseason win over the Raiders. Cine was considered day-to-day heading into Saturday's preseason opener due to a leg injury, but the 2022 first-rounder was able to suit up. Cine is looking to catch onto the Vikings 53-man roster as a depth piece in the secondary.
J.J. McCarthy : Nursing knee soreness
McCarthy (knee) is not practicing Monday, and it is unclear if he will travel to Cleveland for joint practices, Dane Mizutani of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. McCarthy excelled during his preseason debut to the tune of two passing touchdowns and 188 yards through the air. The rookie also completed 11 of 17 passes and finished with a 116.8 passer rating. It is unclear how serious his knee soreness is, but it would not be surprising to see the Vikings exercise caution with the 10th overall pick in this year's draft. If McCarthy ultimately misses more practice time, Sam Darnold would presumably get all of the first-team reps, while Nick Mullens and Jaren Hall continue competing for the No. 3 role under center.
Byron Murphy : Plays one series in preseason opener
Murphy (knee) had one tackle and played just one drive in Saturday's preseason win over Las Vegas. Murphy is coming back from a Grade 3 MCL sprain suffered in Week 15 last season. It's a good sign he's playing this early in the preseason even if being eased back into action. If at full speed, he'll be counted on as the team's top corner.
Shaquill Griffin : Misses game with hamstring injury
Griffin missed Saturday's preseason win over Las Vegas due to a hamstring injury, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. Griffin hasn't practiced since late July due to the issue and the severity of the injury isn't clear. The Vikings are struggling with corner back depth with Byron Murphy coming back from a knee injury, Mekhi Blackmon lost to a torn ACL and the death of 2024 fourth-round draft pick Khyree Jackson in a car accident.
Kene Nwangwu : Scores TD in preseason opener
Nwangwu had five carries for 52 yards, including a 48-yard touchdown, in Saturday's preseason win over Las Vegas. Nwangwu has had a role in the offense as the No. 3 running back in training camp and looked good in his preseason debut. He showed off his speed on his his long touchdown run when he turned on the jets after finding a large hole in the defense. While he's not likely to get many carries behind Aaron Jones and Ty Chandler, Nwangwu at least looks like he'll be next up should one of the top two backs succumb to an injury.
